Ford Focus Review – NOT the car I was expecting from Ford Australia

Ford Focus Review Warning: This is totally written by a chick. If you’re expecting a high-tech, detailed review of the features, you’re in the wrong place!

Ford Australia kindly gave me a car for a week, so that I could share the experience with you.

But this was definitely NOT the car I was expecting:

Ford Focus Review

I really should have charged a modelling fee!

This is me and our “flash” 1991 Ford Telstar.

Note: Husband failed to follow strict instructions not to capture my thongs!!!

In giving this unbiased, independent Ford Focus Review

I wish to ethically disclose, that I may be easily pleased!

To my delight, THIS is the car that Ford Australia gave me:

I was worried the Telstar might have got a bit jealous, but she still knows we love her :) .

Definitely a treat, for this new mother. I drove it nearly every day, from where I live in the Sydney western suburbs, to Manly, the city and Surry Hills.

You know this thing reverse parks on its own, right? There are no keys for the ignition, either. You just press a button and the car starts!

These are two of the HOT new features which are pretty cool, but definitely freaky at the same time. Check out my video for demonstration:

I confirm that, yes, I actually do have a valid drivers license :)

Have you ever bought a new car? I haven’t.

I can’t help but think of the depreciation and would much rather invest the money into an investment property.

But, after driving the 2011 Ford Focus Titanium, I totally understand why you would. Getting something brand new, just because you can. And because you want to.

What a powerful feeling, to reward yourself like that.

I bet they specially make that brand new interior car smell, just like McDonalds uses fans to blow the smell of their perfumed fries straight into your direction.

What did I like about the 2011 Ford Focus Titanium?

Really liked the size.

Loved the fuel efficiency.

I was impressed by how it looks. It looks good.

Really loved driving something brand new, where the windows wind up properly and the radio works (I did warn you I’m easily pleased!).

I really enjoyed feeling like a city chick cruising around. Hubby liked it too, if you want the male perspective on it.

What didn’t I like?

It takes diesel fuel which is a bummer, for a money conscious mum like me.

The gadgets are fancy and gives you something to talk about, but they don’t impress me enough to make the buying decision based on those things alone.

Apparently you can talk to it to do stuff, but I couldn’t work that out. Not sure I really want to feel like David Hasselhoff in Knight Rider anyway…

I do know how to reverse park, so I didn’t actually use that Park Assist feature. I suppose if you don’t know how to, it would be pretty handy.

Here’s a photo of my 9 month old son and the 2011 Ford Focus Titanium (hope this isn’t illegal):

The million dollar question: Would I buy it?

You know, I don’t even know how much it costs. Price being a big factor, I would have to know that first.

But, unlikely to buy it brand new. Would I buy it second hand?

I would DEFINITELY consider it. Importantly, I just feel better about the Ford brand. I’m so grateful for this experience and I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.

If a car brand can make me feel better about them, when it comes time to making a purchase (which, soon we will be), then that is extremely important because hubby knows I will have the final say…

Ford is higher on my radar than any other car brand right now.

Would I recommend it to you for a test drive? Yes, I would. Absolutely, check it out.

Have you ever bought a car brand new? Who makes the decision in your household, to buy a car?

Not sure if I’ll ever afford to buy a new car but I so wouldn’t mind reviewing them!

  • Harry Lynn says:

This review was far tooooooo techie for me. I thought there would be important stuff such as the interior and exterior colour, whether there were cup holders, or a place for your purse – not mine !
    Glad you enjoyed the Focus

  • Love the video of you trying out the reverse parking for the first time. Looked like it was a bit scary for you the first time, but I’m sure after a few goes it would be become second nature and a breeze. Good to hear you do have a license by the way :)

Hi Jan. Yes, it was a little weird, but cool too. Love doing things that expand my mind like that.
I also love seeing the power of human creation and what we humans are capable of.
Imagine hearing about this feature 10 or 20 years ago…

    Hi Lina,

What a huge blast! Love watching the video – and loved seeing you drive it around :)

    Brilliant!

    Congratulations.
Would I buy a new car? Sure if hubby was paying for it!

    Cheers
    Lisa

  • I love the video!

  • Nice video of the core ‘differentiating’ feature. That built on my understanding from Ford’s traditional 30 second ad, which really can’t pack in too much information. Yup, Ford is a brand that I also trust for cars – much more than I trust European brands in fact. Mainly because if you have trouble with a European car you need to re-mortgage your house.

Sounded like you had a good fun with the car! And yes, you are easily pleased : )

Would be great to see how the reverse park function perform
in a tighter spot. But it definitely looks interesting.

We always go for a brand new car, despite the depreciation. I think mainly for the peace of mind. For us, it’s totally worth it.
We don’t know much about cars, and don’t want to get stuck with a lemon.

Back to Ford, I would definitely check it out. Thanks Lina!

    • lina says:

A brand new car would definitely give you the certainty of quality, that’s for sure. And you always know exactly how it has been treated and what work has been done on it.
Very interesting perpsective, Pia! Thanks for sharing! :)

  • Oh how fun! I can tell you that when I was 18 I bought a new car, a little Toyota Starlet Hatchback, everyone told me not to, because it would depreciate too quickly…… Well guess what, that car is STILL with me today aged 31, she took me through all the major life events, camping, holidays, moving house, even bringing my 3 babies home! (yep we fit a family of 5 into a hatchback).
She has over 420000 km’s on the clock and was THE single best purchase I have ever made in my life. So I could be tempted to buy a new car again if it was to be as brilliant as my first ever new car. Hubby has a Ford Courier that’s a 1987 model and still going strong, our problem is that we’re now planning an upgrade to a lovely newer 4wd so who knows if we’ll ever be able to afford new lol!

    • lina says:

      Hi Ree!

Wow, what a story. Your story really does make me think about the possibility of buying a brand new car. Isn’t that amazing – that you brought your three babies home in that car.
Thanks for sharing that with us. I’d love to know what you plan on upgrading to!

    Hi Lina,

Loved your ‘mothers point of view’ review of the ford, it was so entertaining. I normally turn off from car reviews, as they are too techie and boring!
I don’t know about the reverse parking feature, that was out of my realm of thinking. I have a farming background and parking horse floats and trailers was always normal, so the thought of the car parking itself is something I would have to get used to :)

    • lina says:

      Thanks Sue-Ellen!
I hope you get to have a go in one of these some time…
Who knows, maybe one day, all cars will be able to reverse park themselves…
      Lina

  • My wife bought a new car 5 years ago and it’s still good as new, I do most of the driving and it’s my job to look after it. I have to admit it is very nice to having everything responding to my finger tips, I don’t have to worry about things breaking down either. I could do with reverse parking though, nothing wrong with Fords, I use to drive my boss’s Ford, it was quite an experience.
