Plastic Genitals And Vibrating Tools

What would you think if, you came to this blog, expecting some beautiful, empowering, inspiring love letters written from Mother To Child…

And you got a blog post about sex toys?

Here’s a story about an offer I got from a media company…

that’s proud of their premium client list and “expertise” in digital marketing.

mothers blogging mummy bloggersI’ve been reviewing, managing and responding to the email enquiries for y Travel Blog and Mojito Mother for almost two months now.

This is part of the service I provide to them as their Blogger’s Agent.

The vast majority of companies contacting them, just want something…

Usually in return for nothing, or very little.

The ones who are a little more professional and understand how to approach someone cold, will make more effort to offer something of value.

I was responding to an email from a “Content Publishing Manager” who manages “highly experienced travel writers”.

She gave me a very impressive portfolio and asked about guest writing for y Travel Blog.

I also liked that she approached us with a very respectful and thoughtful email, and expressed my gratitude to her for that.

While I declined her offer for guest posting (her particular proposal didn’t quite suit my client’s vision), I thought I’d explore what else she wanted to achieve and whether she had other campaigns I could help her with.

She gave me an acceptable offer for a paid post with contextual linking, targeting health/beauty/women’s lifestyle.

So, I offered her Mojito Mother and Mother’s Love Letters for consideration.

Here’s the subsequent email exchange:

“Hi Lina,

Thanks for sending those two links, i’ve taken a look and they both look great.
The clients we can use for these blogs would be [raunchy adult sex toy shop] or we have quite a few travel related clients.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks.”

The blogger in me felt a twinge of being offended and evoked a sense of “How dare she!” within me.

Then, within a couple of seconds I saw the hilariousness of it all…

And of course, the golden blog post opportunity (I hadn’t posted in a week, so this was the universe’s perfect delivery of some much-needed inspiration).

The Blogger’s Agent in me then replied with this:

“Hi [Name of previously respectful media person]

Are you serious?

One blog is about a mother writing love letters to her baby.

And the other one is a mother sharing her life about her baby and toddler.

I think dildos and vibrators and plastic vaginas might be a slightly odd match.

Don’t you?

The reply:
“Ok no worries, we’ll leave it then.
Thanks”

When looking at advertising or sponsorship for a blog, obviously one of the most important things to look for, is a basic concept called Brand Fit.

You definitely don’t need a Marketing degree to get this. It’s common sense and commercial sense.

But in a world where common sense is not so common…

Or where people are in such a hurry, they don’t even bother to check the most obvious and important of details…

This is the kind of thing that can happen.

I expect this nonsense from spammers. Not professionals who approach bloggers with a proposal to work together, collaboratively.

I did reply by the way, to let her know that if she has more appropriate campaigns, that I would consider them (Any thoughts if you would’ve handled that differently?).

The purpose of this blog post is to demonstrate:

How you can make a great first impression… and then totally destroy that when acting in haste or just being an idiot.

Why bloggers should not get upset with this stuff. Just laugh.

As a blogger, don’t then get all diva about it and use your online reach and audience to publicly shame the individual who stuffed up. If you’re going to share the story, think twice about disclosing identifying information. We all make mistakes.

If you do identify the brand, do it for a useful purpose and be prepared to deal with the backlash.

(Mrs Woog did such a good job of it, she made me use the “F” word in public AND in writing: An Unsponsored Post About A Sponsored Post)

Any thoughts?

  • Hilarious Lina!! I loved your response.

You do have to laugh at these sorts of things. It does provide you with great entertainment.

I like your points about being careful to shame the company.I know there are a few blog posts I have written in my mind to do that, but on greater thought I canned the idea, because I don’t really want to use my brand to abuse in that way. I know that sometimes people just make mistakes and you have to allow those to happen. Every business is going to stuff up somewhere. And I hope when I do that people allow me that space for mistakes without crucifying me online.

If I do, I usually just send out a tweet sharing my frustration and so far that has only been about one telecommunication company in Australia who shall not be named. We’ll just call them the Big T!!

      Yes, good entertainment.
In my case, at 5am when I’m checking my emails… !
Hmmm… On second thoughts, maybe I should have at least put the proposal to you, for you to consider?
Maybe get $50 worth of giveaways and some product for Craig too???
I thought I’d use my initiative and knock it back though… LOL…

    Hi Lina,

You so got me!!! I was so scared to click on this link….I was thinking “Oh my gosh, has Lina gone mad” !! Then when I started to read…it all made sense. Of course Lina is fine…its the other company that needs to re-think their marketing skills.
A good one to laugh at – but gee – what was that person thinking?
    Cheers
    Lisa

LOL Lina – this is gold! I had a lovely chuckle. thanks.

I love your integrity too. :)

  • Harry Lynn says:

    Well replied Lina,
And very tastefully done. I recently had a UK company who wanted to post a page with a link to online gaming on the Learning Grand Pianos site for $$$$$ per year. Most inappropriate I decided in a nano-second !!
They at least accepted my decision with grace.
    Big Hug

Bahahahahaha oh my god I love this!! Send her to me hahahaha

  • I just love the way you appear to have remained respectful and thoughtful (and I’m also thinking calm) throughout – even if they didn’t. Good idea to not take things like this too seriously or personally. Just laugh and make the most of it – as you have in creating another entertaining blog :)

I like others was thinking what??????

However, as you say it is not exactly rocket science to work out that there is no fit with these blogs and that industry, although you can never say never!

Alas some people really have no decorum and you Lina handled the situation with poise. I am afraid I may have been a little more blunt!

    xxxxx

    • Fiona says:

      ah bad grammar…..
      I, like others……

    • lina says:

Never say never! LOL, you’re right, Fiona!
I guess I took my approach because I am learning not to criticise.
I don’t like to cause hurt. I accept that we all make mistakes.
In being less critical of others, hopefully I learn to be less hard on myself and less critical of myself.
Thanks for stopping by :) .

    Hi Lina,

I’m knocking back all in post text links even if they’re not for sex toys.

But I have still reached the end of my tether this week with the endless insane demands for me to publicise everything from airlines to shoes free of charge on the blogs I have worked very hard to grow.

One PR lady particularly annoyed me wanting to push a travel game show. I suggested a sponsored post and she emailed back saying: we don’t pay to play. I couldn’t resist replying that the show contestants pay $10,000 to appear on the show!

She ignored that but guess what? She has still left me on her spam list and keeps sending me media releases. Arrrrgh.

I’m worried I’m starting to get jaded by it all. Looking forward to a break over Xmas and Jan:)

    • lina says:

      Hi Annabel

I’m coming up with new ideas on how to better manage y Travel Blog’s emails, now that I have a good handle on the kinds of enquiries they get.
We’re going to put up a new page on the blog explaining what we will and won’t respond to.
Yes, the break will be good for you. Stepping away for a little while to refresh and reassess, is an important part of being productive and moving towards your vision.
Nice to see you again, Annabel :) .
      Lina

Best not to take things like this too seriously, I should think, and laugh it off much in the way you were able to… with an appropriate response to follow, that is…
