Your First Christmas
To My Beautiful Child,

I write this one of my Mother’s Love Letters on the Eve of your very first Christmas.
It’s your first Christmas.
And it’s my first Christmas as a mother.
As I reflect on what this time of year means to me, I would like to share my thoughts with you.
My darling, it’s a time of year in Australia where children are taking a long break from school. Adults are taking some time off work. Businesses are closed too.
For some, Christmas means a lot. For others, it means very little.
When I was growing up -
Christmas for my parents – your Vietnamese grandfather (Ong) and grandmother (Ba) – was about celebrating the birth of a little baby whose life on earth meant so much, to so many.
Ong and Ba never told me stories of a jolly old man, coming down the chimney to deliver toys from the North Pole on his reindeers.
Instead, we celebrated by going to church (something Ong and Ba still do a lot of, even when it’s not Christmas).
They brought me up, to celebrate Christmas as the birth of a human life.
Even though this occasion doesn’t have the same religious significance to me, as it does for Ong and Ba, what they have imparted, will stay with me forever.

Daddy’s family on the other hand, is not religious at all.
For them, this has always been a time of gift giving and receiving, as an expression of gratitude and love.
As we work out what we would like this time of year to mean for us, our new little family, I want you to know that…
I am so incredibly grateful to have received you, the gift of my child.
I love you,
Mummy xx

Beautiful as usual Lina. Like your parents, Christmas is vitally important. I celebrate the birth of my Saviour Jesus.
Have a look at my latest Post – “The Twelve Days of Christmas-The Greatest Gift of All.”
Trust you had a great Christmas. I wish you and your family every blessing for 2012.
Doctor Bill
Thank you, Dr Bill. For someone who has experienced so many Christmas’s, it’s such a joy to see you celebrate it with a child’s heart.
Hi Lina,
interesting to read about your thoughts on Christmas. I used to think differently about xmas to what I now think…..its not about the gifts anymore its about the experiences in life – they are what make a great Christmas!
Love the story about your families tradition for the meaning of Christmas.
Cheers
Lisa
Thank you, Lisa. I hope you had a nice one with your beautiful family xx
